Welcome to the
SSIEM Adult Course
March 18-20, 2027
Rotterdam
Erasmus University Medical Centre
The SSIEM IMD Adult Course is an educational programme for healthcare professionals involved in the care of adults with inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs). Designed for clinicians wishing to develop or expand their expertise in adult inherited metabolic medicine, the course provides comprehensive training in the diagnosis, treatment, and lifelong management of adults with IMDs, integrating current evidence, guidelines, best clinical practice, and emerging developments in the field.
About the SSIEM-Adult Course
Find out more about the SSIEM IMD Adult Course.
What is the purpose of the SSIEM Adult Course?
The SSIEM IMD Adult Course provides a comprehensive introduction to the biochemical basis, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs) in adult medicine.
During the course, participants will attend lectures and interactive workshops covering the biochemical and pathophysiological mechanisms underlying IMDs, their clinical presentation in adulthood, and current approaches to diagnosis and management. Topics include diagnostic strategies, the interpretation of metabolic investigations, the treatment of acute and chronic manifestations of IMDs, and the management of long-term complications. The course also addresses the rationale for disease-specific therapies, including pharmacological treatments. Particular emphasis is placed on dietary management.
To ensure a common foundation of knowledge, the course is preceded by a series of online lectures that participants complete before attending the in-person programme.
The course is delivered in two complementary steps:
Step 1 – Online preparation (available from 7 December 2026)
Participants receive access to an online learning platform featuring short lectures (approximately 8 hours of teaching) covering the fundamental principles of adult inherited metabolic medicine and selected IMDs. The platform remains accessible until 15 March 2027.Step 2 – SSIEM IMD Adult Course (18–20 March 2027)
During the in-person course, participants attend lectures delivered by experienced faculty and take part in four interactive, case-based workshops, each focusing on one of the major organ systems affected by IMDs: the liver, muscle, nervous system, and multisystem disorders. The workshops are built around clinical cases submitted by participants.
What are the learning objectives?
The course aims to provide participants with the knowledge and skills to:
- Understand the biochemical basis of inherited disorders of carbohydrate, protein, fatty acid, and intermediary metabolism, as well as disorders of complex molecules (e.g. glycosphingolipids and glycosaminoglycans).
- Understand the principles of metabolic laboratory investigations and interpret their results.
- Understand the pathophysiology underlying the clinical manifestations of inherited metabolic diseases (IMDs).
- Understand the principles of the acute management of metabolic decompensations and the long-term management of adults with IMDs, including dietary treatment.
- Recognise the major complications of the most prevalent IMDs and understand appropriate long-term monitoring and follow-up.
- Apply a clinical approach to the diagnosis of inherited metabolic diseases in adult medicine.
- Identify and use key information resources available to physicians caring for patients with IMDs.
Timeline / Deadlines
Application Deadline: 21st of November 2026 (midnight CET).
Delegate Notification: 7th of December 2026
How to apply?
Applications for the SSIEM IMD Adult Course will open in October 2026 via www.ssiem-adultcourse.org.
Applicants are required to submit:
- a one-page curriculum vitae (CV)
- a letter of motivation describing their current role and future plans in the field of adult inherited metabolic medicine
- a brief clinical case presentation (3- max. 5 PowerPoint slides), must be related to one of the lectures or workshop topics (liver, muscle, nervous system, or multisystem disorders). The presentation should briefly outline a clinically relevant case that may serve as the basis for discussion during the interactive workshops.
All applications will be reviewed by the course faculty. If demand exceeds the number of available places, participants will be selected based on their application. Applicants who are selected for the course may be asked to prepare a more detailed case presentation for the course. Submission of an application does not guarantee a place on the course.
Course Fees
- SSIEM members (2027 membership fee paid): EUR 100.00
- Non-SSIEM members: EUR 300.00
Non-members are encouraged to become SSIEM members. Please refer to the SSIEM website for membership information.
